Summary: Closet Witches To many people, the Closet Witches tapes sound more like the Karl Kolchak's Night Stalker tapes. The comparison is not that far fetched. Like Kolchak, Rebecca is a professional that few take seriously. She jumps into the trenches to battle evil face to face, while others mock her from the side lines. Also like Kolchak, she continues her one person crusade despite the lack of help (and sometimes interference) provided by those she protects from the monsters of hell. But unlike Kolchak, Rebecca's editor isn't Tony Vincenzo, who makes matters worse by killing her stories and preventing them from getting published. Far from it! Her editor is Jack Chick, a strong cheerleader that believes every word she speaks. Chick never "buries" her stories, but generously provides her screaming headlines. Make no mistake about it: Although Rebecca's books are no longer published by Chick, her successful career is a direct result of his enthusiastic promotion of her story. Why did Chick stop publishing her? Reportedly, it's because he prayed about it and God told him to stop. This was also after Rebecca got married to Daniel Michael Yoder who has some serious credibility problems (including a legal record) and her supernatural claims continued to become more sensational. Even her first book, He Came To Set the Captives Free, includes werewolves and vampires. (Too bad she doesn't mention any androids with Robomatic Internalized Nerve Ganglia, then the Night Stalker comparison would have been complete.) It's indeed odd that her books are found in many more Christian book stores than Chick tracts are. How could they possibly be less controversial? Whatever the reason, they apparently sell quite well. She is said to make tens of thousands of dollars a month in royalties. What happened to Elaine? She seems to have dropped off the face of the planet. Some say she's angry she received no money from her story while Rebecca lives the life of Riley. Others say she returned to Witchcraft (perhaps that's just a rumor started by witches). Whatever happened, don't expect to see her turn up soon in any of those Where Are They Now? TV series. One thing is for certain. Whether you think Rebecca's story is true or so phoney it's funny, you still have to admit it's very entertaining. Some of Chick's most amazing tracts resulted from her influence (including Satan's Master and The Poor Little Witch). It's a shame she never got any Crusader comics to feature her story like they did with Alberto. That would have REALLY been something! Just imagine: ghouls, ghosts, vampires, witches, warlocks and werewolves... The dramatic possibilities are endless. Besides the great tracts that Rebecca inspired, Chick collectors also got these two fantastic 90 minute tapes. They provide not only wonderful narrative from Rebecca, but also Elaine AND Chick himself, who uses the occasion to fill us in with personal stories from his early days with Alberto. They are long tapes, but so packed with great tales, you'll be sorry when they end. If ever a tape deserved the AAA rating, it's this one, for Action And Adventure! |
